North Wales Assembly Member Mark Isherwood has supported a group of keen Welsh cyclists who completed an epic 320 mile journey across Wales last week.
The ‘Tour de Cymru’ is a 4-day cycling challenge which took place from 28 June – 1 July, raising money for disabled people to access sport in Wales.
For the second year in a row, charity Leonard Cheshire organised the unique event that took participants from Anglesey in the North to Swansea in the South. The route took in inclusive sports facilities throughout Wales.
Mr Isherwood attended Pedal Power Wrexham, Alyn Waters Country Park, on Friday to welcome riders over the finish line of day 1.
He said:
“I commend all the riders who took part in this year’s ‘Tour de Cymru’. It really is quite an achievement to cycle such a distance, particularly given the extremely hot weather in which they had to do it. I was pleased to welcome them over the finish line at the end of day one and chat to them as they enjoyed a well-deserved ice-cream.
“Throughout the event there was also several disabled individuals completing their own TDC challenge by cycling a 1 mile circuit on adapted bikes and I was pleased to present medals to them.
“The money raised from the Tour will be used to support disabled people who use Leonard Cheshire’s services in Wales to have access to adapted sports and physiotherapy equipment, as well as helping disabled people gain access to sporting events in the local area.
“This could range from wheelchair dancing, bowling, archery or horse-riding, to something as simple as supporting disabled people to see their favourite team play live.”
