North Wales MS Mark Isherwood has made fresh calls for male victims or survivors of domestic abuse to have access to specialist tailored support, as well as women.
Mr Isherwood made the call during an intervention in yesterday’s Welsh Conservative Debate to mark International Men’s Day.
He said:
“The Office for National Statistics states that a third of the victims of domestic abuse are actually male, and shockingly, boys; children. Do you agree therefore with me that we need specialist tailored support accessible to people in safe spaces in their own areas if they are victims or survivors, men and boys as well as women?”
Peter Fox MS agreed.
He said:
“We take nothing away from the terrible problems that some women have to face day in, day out, but there are men and boys who are facing terrible situations as well, and they do need to be able to access the support they need to help them through those very difficult times. Often, people ignore men in that domestic abuse situation.”
Mr Isherwood has raised the matter numerous times in the Welsh Parliament in recent years and in 2021 stated: “Whilst women are far more likely than men to be killed by partners or ex-partners, men can be victims too, and the number of men killed as a result of domestic violence has been rising”.
